Difference between lan and wan

Difference between LAN and WAN are explain in this post but firstly we understand what is computer network. A computer network can be anything ranging from two interconnected computers to thousands of interconnected computers. The connection between computers can be permanent via cables or a temporary telephone line or other communications skills.

Difference between lan and wan

Types Of Network

Based largely on a networks geographical size, we can divide networks into three categories:

Local Area Network (LAN)

Wide Area Network (WAN)

Metropolitan Area Network (MAN)

Local Area Network (LAN)

It is a network of computers that operates in a very small geographic area up to a few kilometers. It is used to link devices in a single office, building, or campus.

Wide Area Network (WAN)

A wide area network covers a large geographic area such as a country, continent, or even the whole of the world to share data and resources. It contains several LANs and WANs.

Metropolitan Area Network (MAN)

A metropolitan area network is a network that interconnects users with computer resources in a geographic area or region larger than that covered by even a large local area network but smaller than the area covered by a wide area network in a city.

Difference between LAN and WAN

LAN covers a small geographical area but WAN covers a large geographical area.

LAN is used to link devices in a single office building or a campus but WAN is used to link devices in a country, continent, and even whole of the world.

LAN is usually privately owned but WAN can be private, public, or leased type.

LAN offers high data rate communication but WAN offers low data rate communication.

LANs are easy to install and maintain but WANs are difficult to install and maintain.

In LAN there is no propagation delay but in WAN there is propagation delay.

LAN operates on the principle of broadcasting but WAN operates on the principle of switching.
